New $1.4-plus million police headquarters near Nicaragua border
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
On Friday, the new border police station was inaugurated. The so-called Delta Costa Rica is located on the banks of the Colorado River in the district of Llanuras del Gaspar in Sarapiquí Canton, bordering Nicaragua. The new post required an investment of $1,144,314, announced the Ministry of Security.
The control station construction was financed with a donation by the National Emergency Commission.
The new control post of 1,347 square meters also includes green areas and a parking zone. The building can house 94 people, including separate male and female bedrooms for staff and headquarters, an entrance control booth, reception, waiting room, cells for men and women, restrooms, warehouses, offices, an armory, patrol vehicles and boat patrols.
The new post will carry out all land and water police patrols operations throughout the Colorado River, Calero Island, Delta Costa Rica, Agua Dulce and Puerto Lindo, among other locations located in the cantons of Sarapiquí and Pococí.
"This new delegation is the base of operations for the defense of national sovereignty, immigration control, environmental protection, the fight against organized crime and citizen security," Michael Soto, Minister of Security said.
According to Soto, two more police bases will be built in the northern zone. One will be built in Agua Dulce and another in the Barra del Colorado southern zone.
The financing of the construction of bases for the border police is made with the budget authorized by the presidential emergency decree, the ministry said.
Since the closure of the border in March until August 14, according to the General Directorate of Migration, 19,053 people have been rejected entry into the country.
In June, was created the command post or police operations center in the northern region of the country in Tablillas de Los Chiles District in Alajuela Province.
The new post is intended to handle police operations due to covid-19.
“Now we are reinforcing the seven cantons of attention; bringing more police support, " Minister Soto said. "And work more due to the Ban on driving restrictions issued on these cantons.”
The increase in police presence responds to the Emergency Alert issued by the National Emergency Commission, increasing restrictions in some of the districts in that area of the country.
The command post has officers from the Ministry of Security, Traffic, Migration, Ministry of Health personnel, among other public institutions.
