New $1 million bridge in the southern zone will be ready in September

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The National Emergency Commission announced that in September a new bridge over the Coto Brus River* in the southern area of the province of Puntarenas will open. The cost of the bridge is $1,042,086.

"The new bridge will help change and improve people's quality of life and will bring well-being to the entire community, facilitating access roads for education and work, as well as for commerce," said President Carlos Alvarado during an inspection in the construction area.

According to the Commission, this bridge between the communities of Limoncito and Pittier is part of the re-building project that is pending due to the damage caused by the passage of Hurricane Otto in November 2016 and the tropical storm Nate on October 2017.

The cost of the bridge was financed with resources from the National Emergency Fund. An additional $39,886,740 will be used for the construction of 53 bridges in the country.

"The bridge is 90 percent built and will be completed in September," said the Commission in its statement.

As A.M. Costa Rica previously reported in June, of the 53 bridges that were destroyed by the Hurricane Otto or Tropical Storm Nate, only 24 have been repaired or rebuilt.

With a budget of approximately $37,875,420 the Commission continues in the process of designing, repairing, or constructing the 29 bridges located in: Upala, Naranjo, Guatuso, Grecia, San Ramón, Turrialba, Bagaces, La Cruz, Sarapiquí, Matina, Limón, Coto Brus, Buenos Aires, Corredores, Golfito, Mora, Moravia, and Dota.

"To date, 24 bridges are ready, of which seven are new, the rest were repaired," said the Commission in its statement.

Just in the communities of La Cruz*, Upala*, and Bagaces*, 21 bridges were rebuilt or repaired after having been destroyed during Hurricane Otto.

"After Hurricane Otto and Tropical Storm Nate many communities were cut off from communication, transportation was difficult, and many farmers could not harvest their crops," said Alexander Solis, president of the Commission.
