Nativity inauguration at National Theater Sunday afternoon

The National Theater inaugurates its Christmas nativity scene Sunday with live actors and refreshments. The three-hour event is in the garden of the theater starting at 3 p.m.
According to the theater, the recreation of the nativity scene will feature Costa Rican actors, and the production will also include Christmas music concerts with choirs, all to be captured on a giant video screen for the benefit of those standing the the Plaza de la Cultura west of the theater.
For the construction of the scene materials such as mahogany, cane and bamboo were used and installed over a metal platform covered with hay. Each year the theater staff tries to vary the scene.
The costumes of the actors were inspired by the art images and illustrations of Jesus birth, said the theater. The characters come from the biblical stories and include shepherds, wise men and, of course, the Sacred Family. Typically the highlight of the inauguration is the placing of the image of the baby Jesus into the crib-like manger.
Many professional choirs will be accompanying the scene of the nativity, as well as concerts during the week performed in the Plaza de La Cultura.
This year, a giant screen was installed where videos of people who visit the nativity performance could share a message of good wishes to the public.
According to the theater, at the end of each concert, coffee, tamales and cookies will be giving away to the public, thanks to a donation by the companies Café 1820, Instamasa and Pozuelo.
The admission to the nativity scene performances and concerts are free.
The first two presentations of the choirs, in a continuous schedule from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., with a brief intermissions are:
- Monday, a concert with Sinergia Choir of Puriscal, the Rondalla Mayor of the University of Costa Rican musicians, and Experimental Group.
- Tuesday, the choir of the Buenaventura Corrales, the Café Chorale, the Intermezzo Choir and the Children's Choral Concordia Choir.
As more concert dates are released, A.M. Costa Rica will be publishing them in a timely manner.
The tradition of the nativity scene in the gardens of the theater began in 1974. At that time the Catholic Church lent the images of Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus.
Shortly thereafter, actors offered to be part of the setting up in the scene, said the theater. Even today, all the characters are actors.
The nativity scene in the theater gardens "has become a tradition at the holiday's celebrations in the capital city," said the theater in its statement.
