-Published: Tuesday, December 3, 2019- Nanci Pelosi
recognizes President Alvarado's
leadership on climate change, says the
government
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
President Carlos Alvarado gave a speech at the Climate Vulnerability Forum at COP25, which is taking place in Madrid, Spain. According to the government, the forum is an association of 20 countries "highly vulnerable to the consequences of global warming," which met in Madrid before the inauguration of COP25, the so-called Climate Change Summit. The speaker of the U. S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, also participated in this forum. According to the government, Pelosi said that Alvarado is a leader in his fight against climate change. "From the challenges they face to the reputation they enjoy, we are blessed by their leadership," said Pelosi. "When we assumed the organization of PreCOP25 last October, we did it with a simple and strong conviction: facing the climate crisis - the biggest challenge we face today, conventional responses are not acceptable and will not be enough," said Alvarado in his speech. All vulnerable countries are responsible for setting the next actions with climate issues and "leading how this transformation will happen," Alvarado said. Also, President Alvarado said that in the country has been implemented “innovative and inclusive policies from environmental health, job creation, equity between men and women, non-discrimination of all kinds and digital inclusion in the era of the Fourth Environmental Revolution.” “We are a small country but with great environmental ambition," said Alvarado. "We have managed to reverse deforestation and today we produce more than 98% of our electricity from renewable energy sources. ” According to Alvarado, his National Decarbonization Plan will generate a net profit of $19.5 billion. "The fundamental point is clear: environmental ambition is ethically correct and also profitable," he said. Alvarado, along with his delegation, joined in several events in advance of the first day of COP25. According to the Presidential House, on ta trip to Uruguay, Alvarado traveled with Manuel Ventura, minister of Foreign Affairs. On the trip to Spain, Alvarado travels with Lorena Aguilar, the vice-chancellor. Alvarado plans to return to the country today, his office said. Alvarado flew to Uruguay Thursday in response to an invitation from President Tabaré Vázquez. Saturday Alvarado flew to Spain to join in the inauguration of the COP25 summit. Some of the previous presidential trips were: In November, Alvarado traveled to New York to receive an award as one of the world’s most influential people, according to Time magazine, at the TIME Next 100 Summit gala. In October Alvarado traveled to Mexico to meet with President Andrés Manuel López-Obrador. In September Alvarado traveled to New York to be part of the U. N. General Assembly. Also in September, Alvarado made his third trip to Panamá this year, where he met with President Laurentino Cortizo. In June the president traveled to El Salvador to attend the inauguration of the new Salvadorian president, Nayib Bukele. In May Alvarado traveled to Germany to meet President Frank Walter Steinmeier and also to meet with Chancellor Angela Merkel. In February, Alvarado traveled to Panamá to meet with the former president of the country, Juan Carlos Varela. In January, Alvarado traveled to Panamá to participate in a Catholic Youth event held with Pope Francis. -------------------- Could the development of clean energy be a profitable business for the country?
