-Published: Friday, January 17, 2020- Mysterious surrounds
the report on Costa Rica as a third best
place for investment
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
The government is trying to clarify the mysterious circumstances surrounded the "Costa Rica is the world's third-best countries for investments" report published by the Washington-based US News and World Report magazine. Monday the Costa Rican Investment Promotion Agency, knows as CINDE, by its acronym in Spanish, sent to local media a press release on the ranking. However, two days later the report was changed by the U.S. magazine. According to the government's statement released to clarify the confusion, "days after the publication by the Presidential House, the U.S. magazine published its 2020 study in which Costa Rica is no longer mentioned." In the earlier publication, Costa Rica was mentioned as the third best place to invest. In a selection from that first publication, U.S. News and World Report magazine release an introduction about the ranking, as follow: "The Top Best Countries to Invest In is a ranking, news, and analysis project created to capture how countries are perceived on a global scale. The rankings evaluate 80 countries across 24 rankings drawn from a survey of more than 20,000 global citizens, measuring 75 dimensions that have the potential to drive trade, travel and investment and directly affect national economies. The things that make a country unique - its people, environment, relationships, framework and teachings - create four distinct factors identified in a report by the World Bank Group that motivate an individual or corporation to invest in that country: natural resources, markets, efficiency and strategic assets like technologies or brands. " According to the magazine's first publication, the Best Countries to Invest In ranking drew from the results of a global perception-based survey and ranked countries based on the highest scores among nearly 7,000 business decision-makers on a compilation of eight equally weighted country attributes: corrupt, dynamic, economically stable, entrepreneurial, favorable tax environment, innovative, skilled labor force and technological expertise. The rankings targeted countries other than the industrialized First World states. The three top countries mentioned in the first report were, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia and Costa Rica in that order. The magazine published a brief introduction about Costa Rica saying that "it is located in the heart of Central America. Costa Rica has been one of the most politically and economically stable countries in Central America since its birth in the 19th century The nation compares favorably to its regional neighbors in areas of human development, and it has used its landscapes of jungles, forests and coastlines to develop an international reputation for ecotourism. Costa Rica's constitution was adopted in 1949 and has since been amended to declare the nation as multicultural and multi ethnic." The original report, published before Wednesday by U.S. News and World Report was saved by the government authorities and can be reached at the U.S.News.com link. The press release published first by the Costa Rican Investment Promotion Agency is still available on its website at the CINDE.org link. According to the report updated on Wednesday, Croatia is the best place to invest, followed by Thailand in second place and the United Kingdom in third place. The updated report can be reached at US News and World Report magazine site. -------------------- Should the authorities investigate the reasons why the magazine changed the ranking?
