As of Tuesday, a total of 2,331,030 vaccines against covid-19 have been applied, reaching a national vaccination rate of 45.7 per 100 inhabitants, according to the statistics from the Vaccine National Information System.

Of these, 1,535,967 people have received their first dose. And 795,063 people have completed their two-dose treatment.

Health authorities established at least 70% of the population, about 3.5 million people in Costa Rica,  to be immune to keep the rate of infection down and achieve herd immunity.

Herd immunity, also known as “population immunity” is a form of indirect protection from infectious disease that can occur with some diseases when a sufficient percentage of a population has become immune to an infection, whether through vaccination or previous infections, thereby reducing the likelihood of infection for individuals who lack immunity, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Last week, the company Pfizer Inc. donated the 52 first-dose vaccines needed to immunize the Costa Rican delegation (including athletes and coaches) for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

According to the health authorities, vaccinating this group was a priority due to the Olympic Games being held from July 23 to Aug. 8. The Paralympic Games will take place from Aug. 24 to Sept. 5. Both international games will be held in Japan.

The second dose of treatment for athletes delegation is scheduled to take place on July 2.

Costa Rica has imported 2,592,375 vaccines against covid-19, according to the National Emergency Commission to continue inoculating the so-called High Risk Population Group.

These are people of priority attention such as elderly folks living in nursing homes, healthcare workers, firefighters, police officers, people over the age of 58, people over the age of 12 with certain health conditions (hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, chronic respiratory disease, chronic kidney disease, obesity, cancer, among others).

There is no vaccination scheduled for people not listed in any of the groups previously mentioned, which includes the rest of the population (Costa Rican and expat residents).

Those living in Costa Rica, but not born in the country, must have a residency ID, known as DIMEX, specific for immigrants with resident status to register for the vaccine.

To get on the list, expats residents must visit the local community clinic, known as Ebais to provide a copy of the DIMEX and one utility bill to verify the person's home address. Then, clinic staff will provide the vaccine date.

According to the Ministry of Health, there are 70,032 active covid-19 cases in the country. Of the total 355,620 cases detected since last year, there were 4,546 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately 1.3% death rate in Costa Rica.

The pandemic has killed more than 3.8 million people worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University.
