By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Fines for reckless driving increased, despite the ban-on-driving rule imposed by the government to try to stop the spread of covid-19. Although there was a significant decrease in the number of vehicles on the roads, there were more officers controlling roads during the pandemic, according to the Traffic Police report. This allowed officers to detect more drivers breaking the traffic law. This year, from January to June, there have been 872 drivers fined for using the opposite lane. This is about $545 in addition to the 6 point penalty on the driver's license. Also, 549 drivers were fined for making a U-turn into oncoming traffic. There were 373 drivers fined for speeding, plus 371 drivers fined for using the opposite lane on a bridge. ![]() Last week, the traffic police reported that 1,703 drivers tested positive for the Driving Under Influence test, DUI. In addition, the driver will receive a 6 point penalty on their driver's license record. The "B-Level" fines consist of endangering others, such as taking children under five years old in a motorcycle, or carrying children without safety devices in the vehicle. This is a fine of approximately $370. The lowest fines are classified as "C-Level." They consist of driving with an expired license or not carrying a car fire extinguisher, among others. The fine is about $40. According to the ministry, the money generated from the fines is used to cover the Traffic Police expenses, road safety campaign expenses, maintain road traffic signs, aid the Red Cross, among others. ------------------------ What is the penalty for driving on the opposite lane in your country?
