More than 13,000 drivers should renew their licenses this month
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
The Road Education Council, Cosevi, advises drivers of the 13,640 licenses that expire in February to renew their documents before Feb. 28 to avoid penalties.
Last year, due to the pandemic, the Ministry of Transport had granted a series of extensions for expired driver's licenses. However, all the extensions expired in January and must be renewed by the end of this month.
Cosevi said in a statement, "it is recommended for drivers to check the expiration date of their license and if it expires this month, request an appointment in the first weeks of February to complete the renewal process with enough time."
In the case of drivers whose license expires in March or April, they will be allowed to do the renewal process as early as this month, since the Traffic Law allows to renew the license 3 months before its expiration.
Renewal of driver's licenses should be requested on Thursdays, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Cosevi website.
In case the website is saturated, the renewal can also be requested by calling 9000-626356 during the same time on Thursday.
Another option is requesting the renewal at any branch of the Banco de Costa Rica by calling 800-227-2482.
The requisites to renew the driver's license are:
• Pay ¢10,000 colones, about $16. • Don't have an awaiting payment fine.
• Have less than 5 penalty points on driving record.
• Have the code of the medical test which confirms good health to drive.
• Have a legal ID.
• Wear a facemask to enter the Council facilities.
In the case of international tourists driving permits, they are allowed to use their country driver’s license until March 2.
The grace period for the use of international driver's licenses was extended according to the Ministry of Transport. All international drivers who have entered the country between December 17, 2019 and November 30, 2020, as a tourist, can drive using their country's license until March 2. Drivers must always carry a driver's license and passport.
