Despite the ban-on-driving rule and early closure time for bars, stores and places to buy liquor, the Traffic Police reported 1,632 drunk drivers were taken before a judge of the Public Ministry for breaking the Traffic Law.

According to the police, this year, from January to August, they conducted 13,248 DUI tests, of which 2,220 drivers, including motorcycle riders tested positive for alcohol.

Of the total positive DUI cases, 1,632 had over 0.75 grams in the breath alcohol. They were arrested and their vehicles were seized. Drivers also have to pay a fine of approximately $530, plus take the penalty of 6 points on their driving record.

When a driver is penalized with 6 points on their driving record, they are forced to take the driving course again and must score a minimum of 80 points out of 100 to renew the license.

Also, 234 drivers had blood alcohol results between 0.20 and 0.75 grams in the test. They were not arrested but they must pay the same fine of about $530 plus the penalty of 6 points on their driving record.

In the case of 354 drivers, also with positive DUI, they had very low levels of alcohol, within the parameters allowed by law, for which they did not receive any sanction.

Recently, Police reported there have been 101 deaths caused by traffic accidents.
