in riverbed improvements in Limón

Costa Rica staff The National Emergency Commission said Thursday it will spend $2.2 million in infrastructure improvements at the edges of two rivers in the Matina district in the Province of Limón. According to the commission, floods caused by the overflow of the Madre de Dios and Caño Azul rivers affected 1,875 people in Matina annually. The improvement project consists in the reconstruction of 1.6 kilometers of a dike in the Sahara and Pueblo Nuevo sector. In addition, work is planned for 7 kilometers of the riverbed of the Madre de Dios river as well as along 6.4 kilometers of the riverbed of the Caño Azul river. The project includes the construction of cross-sections to reduce sedimentation in periods of low flow and canals for periods of high flows. Repairs are expected to begin in the first half of 2020, said the commission. "These improvements will prevent the water from spreading, favoring it to return to the channel as the flow decreases, thus benefiting residential areas, and farms," said the commission in its statement. These improvements come after the flooding caused by the rivers in 2015 affected residents of the communities of Matina, Siquirres, Talamanca, Guácimo and Pococí.  Related to improvement at the province of Limón, the Rural Development Institute announced Nov. 13th, an agreement to repair five kilometers of roads in the southern part of the Guácimo district in the Province of Limón. The cost had been estimated to be $512,769. However, according to estimates made by the institute, the final cost of road construction is approximately $1,253,037, "taking into account the edges of the pipes in some sections with very steep slopes, and the asphalt for the layer of the road surface of the most damaged slopes." The institute will finance with its own resources $512,769, and the municipality will pay the rest of what it will cost to fix the road. According to the institute, the area where the road will be repaired in the Province of Limón is characterized by great natural beauty. "However, despite having ideal conditions for tourism, access to these sites is hard due to the poor condition of some roads, mainly in parts that have steep slopes," it said. The goal of the agreement between the institute and the municipality is to improve the conditions of access to tourist areas in the southern part of Guácimo, said the institute in its statement. Currently, the roads have earth and rocks surface, and there is no public transport service. People in the community and tourists can only walk or use a car suitable for those conditions.
