More bulls, carnival, horse parades at Palmares Fest

Palmares Fest takes place in the city of Palmares in Alajuela as a continuation of the recently New Year festival in San José.

This year the fest will present bull riding rodeo championships, the popular so-called improvised toreros bullfights, carnivals, sports competitions, concerts, folk food and dances, among many other activities.

Bullfights, concerts and fireworks will be presented every day of the festival from Jan. 17 to 26.




The festivities begin on Thursday, Jan. 16, with the horse parade. This event has a route of 2.5 km along the main avenue of the city with an expectation of more than 1,500 riders.

On Friday, Jan. 17, the bullfights will be taking place in the ring located in the center of the city. In this activity that starts at noon, the bull riding championship will take place right before the improvised toreros show.

On Saturday, Jan. 18, the cycling championship will take place, starting at 9 a.m. Any person can join in the bicycle race after paying the registration of approximately $50.

On Sunday, Jan. 19, it will be the turn of the fashion old cars parade, which begins at 9 a.m. in the same route of the horse parade, that is along the main avenue of the city.

On Monday, Jan. 20, a free concert will be held in the central park of the city starting at 8 p.m. ending with a fireworks show at 10 p.m.

Tuesday, Jan.  21, will be dedicated to the children's festival, which includes games and activities for more than 4,000 children. There will be mechanical games, sports games, sweets and meals for children.

On Wednesday, Jan. 22, the professional wrestling championship will take place from 7 p. m. in the gym in the city.

On Thursday, Jan.  23, the traditional Exhibition of Equine Stars will be held from 8 p. m. This is an equine activity, catwalk type, which gathers the best examples of the horses in the country.

Friday, Jan.y 24 will feature the Night Carnival, which begins at 4 p.m. The activity will have a tour of the main streets of the city. The participation of more than 10 bands and 15 comparsas groups. The so-called comparsas are the groups of dancers and musicians that follow the bands.

The carnival will end with a fireworks show in the central park of the city.

On Saturday, Jan.y 25, the Palma Trail race will take place, beginning at 8 a.m. This is a cross country sport running competition, with a distance of 35 kms.



On Sunday Jan. 26 the Palmares Fest ends with the final of the bull riding championship.

In addition, every day there will also be a presentation of live music concerts, the sale of handicrafts and folk food.

According to the Tourism Institute, festival season in Palmares is one of the biggest annual parties in Costa Rica. "Travelers are welcome to participate in the festivities, and if you decide to attend the fiestas, you’ll be in good company. More than 500,000 people, both locals and tourists, flock to Palmares every year to experience the fiesta for themselves."
