Minister of Health in isolation after
father diagnosed with covid-19

The Minister of Health, Daniel Salas is in isolation until Sept. 6, due to his contact with his father, who tested positive for covid-19 on Monday.

Salas remains isolated in a room inside his home without having contact with his daughter and wife, the ministry said.

The minister will continue with his work virtually until Monday, Sept. 7. He is expected to return to work in person that day to continue leading the fight against the virus that has caused more deaths in the country.

On August 18, the  Vice Minister of Health Pedro González-Morera announced that he was temporarily assuming the Minister role until Aug. 23, due to Minister Daniel Salas requested for vacation days in order to tend to his father's health.



As of Tuesday afternoon, the Ministry provided the following statistics on the status of the virus in the country:

842 new covid-19 cases, bringing the total to 21,856 active cases. The ages of patients infected range from a three-month-old baby to a 98-year-old person.

8,511 foreign-born people have been infected of the 35,305 cases since March, approximately 24% of the total cases.

• 412 patients are being treated in public hospitals, where 144 patients are in Intensive Care Units in delicate health conditions, 268 patients are in recovery rooms. Most of the infected patients are quarantined in their homes.

• 13,073 coronavirus patients have fully recovered, which is a 37% recovery rate.

• 86,834 people have been ruled out.

• 136,154 medical covid-19 tests have been made.

376 deaths of people infected with covid-19 since March, approximately 1% death rate. Of these 144 were women and 232 men. The ages range from 21 to a 100-year-old person.

Since July 30, the ministry announced they will not provide updated information on immigrants who die from covid-19 in the country. Up to then, authorities reported 30 foreign-born people had died from covid-19 since March.

As of Tuesday night, the pandemic has  killed 819,414 patients worldwide, according to recent statistics reported by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.
