Middle East conflicts force President Alvarado to cancel trip to the Emirates

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

President Carlos Alvarado announced that due to "the tense situation in the Middle East, raised in recent hours," he decided to cancel his trip to the United Arab Emirates.

Alvarado had planned to go with many government officials, including:

- Manuel Ventura, minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship.

- Pilar Garrido, minister of Planning.

- Rolando Castro, deputy minister of the Ministry of Energy.

- Román Macaya, the president of Social Security.

- Juan Ramón Rivera, the president of the Costa Rican Institute of Pacific Ports.

- Alejandra Solano, the director of foreign policy.

- Eduardo Trejos, the director of the Directorate of Intelligence and Security.

According to the Presidential House, the trip of the president and his delegation was scheduled to take place from Jan. 12 to 16, with the goal of attracting resources and projects to the development of the country.

On the agenda that the president and his companions were scheduled were activities such as:

- Meeting with Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He is crown prince of Abu Dhabi and a leader of the United Arab Emirates armed forces.

- Signing a memorandum on renewable energy.

- Inaugurate Sustainability Week at Expo 2020 Dubai.

- Meeting with the director of the Abu Dhabi Development Fund.

- Meeting with other investors. Presidential House did not provide specified information on who these other investors were.

- Visiting the Chamber of Industries and Commerce of Dubai.

-Visiting the Dubai Investment Corp.

-Visiting the DPWorld company.

- Giving a speech at a green finance forum in Abu Dhabi.

President Alvarado was invited by Prince Mohammed bin Zayed "as part of a rapprochement process between the two countries, which have maintained diplomatic relations since 2010, seeking to strengthen projects of interest in multiple areas, particularly oriented towards rural territories and coastal areas in the areas of health, sustainable development, education, security and infrastructure," said Casa Presidential in its statement.

"We reiterate our friendship with the United Arab Emirates and our commitment to continue working on the bilateral and cooperation agenda built up to this point," said Alvarado.

Commenting on the conflict in the Middle East, the president said he has advocated a peaceful exit of the conflict between Iran and the U.S., which affects stability in the region.

In June 2019, the government announced an agreement with the United Arab Emirates for investments to improve the trade, finances and infrastructure.

During the visit of the delegation of the United Arab Emirates to Costa Rica was signed two memorandums of understanding on trade and products with the halal seal. There also were additional agreements on cooperation and investments, said the Ministry of Planning in its statement.

According to the ministry, that Arab countries will invest in trade, port infrastructure in the central Pacific.

Also, the possibility of developing businesses on renewable energy, hospital infrastructure and decarbonization were to be studied, said the ministry.

"Our main achievement is that we will have your financial cooperation to stabilize the debt and continue on the path of sustainability of public finances," said María del Pilar Garrido Gonzalo, minister of National Planning. "The first part of that financial cooperation would be managed this year."

The delegation of United Arab Emirates was led by Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh, minister of state and the directors of the Abu Dhabi Development Fund, the DP World company, the Food Security Directorate, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, among others.
