Man
ordered to pay more than $35,000 for draining
wetlands
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The Criminal Court of Golfito*, in the province of Puntarenas, found a man surnamed Delgado-Orozco responsible for destroying wetlands inside a protected area and guilty of breaking the wildlife conservation law. According to the sentence, Delgado-Orozco should serve one year in prison, and pay a fine of $35,276. However, the court applied the right known as the Conditional Execution Benefit of the Penalty. The benefit applies when the prison sentence is no more than three years, and the person has no prior criminal record. With this benefit, Delgado-Orozco will not be going to prison. However, for three years, he cannot commit any crime. Or, the benefit will automatically expire and he will be sent to prison. According to the ruling, in 2011, Delgado-Orozco had destroyed an area of wetlands, for the planting of palms crop for oil production. The property is located in the community of Piedras Blancas in Osa*. Delgado-Orozco issued the order to drain and dry the wetland, without having the corresponding authorization. Then, he also built seven irrigation canals, with which he intended to prepare the land for the cultivation of palm oil. Delgado-Orozco is also the President of the Board of Directors of the Solidarity Association of Employees of a palm oil company. Also, the judge ordered the Ministry of Environment to destroy the irrigation canals and palm crops. ------------------------ Have you heard about companies destroying wetland to plant African palms to produce palm oil?
