Man arrested suspected of sexually exploiting women
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
Wednesday, agents of the Judicial Investigation Organization arrested a 47-year-old man, surnamed Vargas-Obando, suspected of trafficking women the purpose of sexual exploitation.
According to the agents' report, the investigation began several months ago, after they received a confidential complaint about the suspect who apparently owns a website that offers women for sexual services.
According to the investigation, after users access this page, "they can see a catalog of the women who available for sexual services. When the client chooses a photo he/she must fill out a form with personal information, as well as with data of the place where they want the sexual services to take place, it could be a hotel, motel or a house" said the agents said in their report.
The website also displays the price for one hour of services," which could exceed $200," said the agents.
After the appointment is made, it is presumed the suspect would take the woman to the place previously agreed upon.
"For this service, apparently, the client pays the woman. Half of the money is intended for her and the other half is intended for the suspect," said the agents in their statement.
According to the case, women are hired through the same page, since there is a "casting" section, where women send their information and photographs and then are contacted for an interview.
"Apparently, the suspect took advantage of the vulnerability of women, since some are foreigners with illegal immigration status and some are Costa Ricans who have a bad economic situation," said the agents in their report.
In addition to the arrest of the suspect, at his home in the community of Desamparados*, in San José, agents seized cell phones, cash in colones and dollars, computers, a camera, and other devices and documents of interest for the case.
This investigation is in the initial stage of evidence collection.
The suspect was taken to the cells of the Public Ministry where he was interrogated by the judicial agents and must wait until a judge orders pre-trial measures against him.
