By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The forest fire season this year, during the summer season from December to June, registered the least damage in hectares within the Protected Wild Areas since 1999, according to the National System of Conservation Areas. This year, destruction of 845 hectares was registered within Protected Wild Areas, while in 2020 it was registered 1,371 hectares burned, which is equivalent to a reduction of 526 hectares destroyed. According to specialists, since 1999 there has not been a similar reduction in forest fires, with 857 hectares burned that year. Regarding the forest fires in areas out of protected territories, there were 21,836 hectares burned this year. In total, 88 forest fires emergencies attended, 23 happened in protected areas and 65 in other types of properties, such as government lands, indigenous territories and the maritime-land zone. Another factor that helped control the fires quickly were the rains in April, which this year were higher than the typical ones in previous years. The main causes for which the forest fires started were vandalism, revenge and hunting activities, with 34 percent of the total fires being reported. Followed by agricultural and pasture burning with 31 percent of reported cases. Guanacaste had 22,059 hectares burned. Puntarenas had 165 hectares burned and Alajuela had 155 hectares burned. Those are the three provinces with the highest record of forest fires during the dry season. According to the report, the improvements in forest fire control were due to the support of 815 people, among firefighters, park rangers and volunteers, trained in fire fighting strategies. Authorities call on the population to report any suspicion of forest fires to the 911 emergency line. ------------------------ What is the forest fire situation in your community?
