International companies in Costa Rica located in the outskirts of the capital employ more than 3,660 people in the country, growing by 15% every year, according to the Costa Rican Investment Promotion Agency, CINDE.
Five years ago, that same industry employed 2,105 people located outside of the Greater Metropolitan Area, GMA, which is the zone made up of cities in the outskirts of San José such as Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago.
One of the more attractive benefits offered to international firms, or Foreign Direct Investment companies, outside the cities is customized investment proposals of those companies related to existing conditions in the rural territories.
“The six regions outside the GMA combine the formula for driving Costa Rica’s sustainable productivity and smart growth based on three strategic pillars: people, planet, and prosperity," Yahaira Barquero, representative of the agency said.
Despite the economic and health crisis caused by the pandemic, in 2020 international private companies created 19,806 new jobs, 18.4% more than the previous year, according to the agency statistics.
The same companies reported a growth of 54% in 2020. And 26 international companies opened operations in the country.
However, despite the positive numbers announced by the agency, the unemployment rate continues to be one of the most critical issues in the country.
According to the Employment Survey, from November 2020 to January 2021, the unemployment rate was 19.1% meaning there are 468,000 unemployed people in the country.

One recent investment of a foreign company in the country was announced earlier this week by the Switzerland-based, biotechnological company Roche.
The European firm first began its Costa Rica operations in June 2017. They currently employ more than 600 workers and are opening 125 new jobs for the People Support Solutions department as part of human resource services.
Job vacancies will be for professionals with advanced English language proficiency and in areas such as compensation, benefits, payroll, training, and acquisition of talent, finance, sales, and information technologies.
Some specific positions require an advanced grasp of French and Portuguese as well. People interested in applying for a job should visit the Roche career site.
Biotechnological firms produced more than $5 billion in 2020, according to the agency. The numbers are based on September's data from the Central Bank of Costa Rica.
