Japan donates $88,000-plus to Tortuguero trash recycling project

The government of Japan, through the embassy, donated $88,183 Friday to the Garbage Recycling Plant Association in Barra del Tortuguero in Pococí, Limón, to finance the purchase of equipment used for collection and recycling garbage in the community.
According to the embassy, the community of Barra del Tortuguero is visited by around 200,000 tourists per year for green turtle watching and to enjoy the wildlife. However, tourism is generating more than 50 tons of trash per month and it is a priority issue to increase the processing capacity to handle trash properly, it said.
"With this donation, you will acquire composting equipment, a plastic mill and a plastic compactor that will improve the service of the plant," said the embassy in its statement.
The donation was made by Yoshiaki Ito, Japanese ambassador, who said that he hopes that the donation will contribute to promote recycling and continue to protect the valuable natural resources of the community.
According to the embassy, this donation comes from the Assistance for Community Projects and Human Security program. This is a non-reimbursable cooperation program that aims to provide financial assistance to non-profit organizations to help achieve their projects at the community and improve the quality of life of their inhabitants.
Diplomatic relations were established between Japan and Costa Rica in February 1935. In December 1941 these relations were interrupted because of World War II. In May 1953, relations between the two countries were restored.
