Is time for Christmas concerts
and theater plays

The National Symphony Orchestra and its choir have announced the beginning of its season of Christmas concerts that will take place in several provinces of the country.
Dec. 1 the orchestra will give the first concert at the Metropolitan Cathedral, in San José. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.
The orchestra will also present concerts in almost all the provinces of the country. A.M. Costa Rica will report the concert dates and places when the information will be available.
Another Christmas activity is the Jazz Music Christmas Concert, organized by the North American Costa Rican Cultural Center, which will take place Dec. 4, at the Espressivo Theater in Curridabat.
Jazz Cultural Center Orchestra will give the concert at 8 p.m. The price of tickets is $20 and can be purchased online at the theater page.
"The orchestra, made up of 25 musicians, will be for the first time at Teatro Espressivo with a repertoire that mixes the best of jazz, in addition to Christmas classics by Michael Bublé, Harry Connick Jr. and Ella Fitzgerald," said the center in its statement.
The concert will also be the celebration of a successful year for the band that won first place in the Next Generation Jazz Competition in California. "This is the first time that a foreign band has won its category at the university level," said the center in its statement.
The Christmas season activities continue Dec. 5 to 15, at the National Theater with the play “A Christmas Carol Musical”.
“A Christmas Carol in Prose Being a Ghost Story of Christmas,” commonly known as “A Christmas Carol,” is a novella by Charles Dickens, first published in London in 1843.
Dickens' novel is a classic of British literature of the Victorian times, and in the modern era, it has become a story that represents Christmas spirit around the world.
“Christmas Carol” recounts the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an elderly miser who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley, and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. After their visits, Scrooge is transformed into a kinder, gentler man.
According to the National Theater, the play this year has new choreography designed by Yessenia Reyes and the musical compositions of Jaime Gamboa and Bernardo Quesada.
"In addition to the introduction of mobile stage effects and renovation of screenings, this year we count with more actors and musicians," said the National Theater in its statement.
Tickets are between $20 and $50, depending on the seat location. Children under 2 enter free. Tickets can be purchased at the National Theater box office or at the Espressivo Theater site.
From Dec. 6 to 15, “The Nutcracker,” will be played at a
Melico Salazar Theater in San José.
This year the main dancers will be from the Prague National Ballet. Nicola Marova and Adam Zvonar will star in the classic Christmas ballet from Dec. 6 to 15.
The Czech dancers will be accompanied by more than 40 Costa Ricans dancers.
“The Nutcracker” is an 1892 ballet, adapted from German composer, music critic and artist Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann's story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King."
“The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” tells how a young Marie Stahlbaum's favorite Christmas toy, the Nutcracker, comes alive and, after defeating the evil Mouse King in battle, whisks her away to a magical kingdom populated by dolls.
Ticket prices vary between $25 and $65, depending on the seating. Tickets can be purchased at the theater ticket office, or through the Eticket.com site.
