shelter for orphans with covid-19 By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The National Children's Trust, PANI, announced the investment of $641,829 for a shelter to serve children infected with covid-19. According to PANI, the shelter will serve 25 patients, children and teenagers, who are under the protection of the government until they are recovered. Thirty-three professionals such as doctors, nurses, psychologists, therapists and administrative staff will be on staff to provide care. The shelter is expected to accept covid-19 infected minors, as well as those suspected of having the virus. After their recovery, the children will return to the orphanage where they are kept in government custody. The investment in the shelter included the remodeling of the facilities, equipment, and supplies necessary for patient care. According to the PANI, since March, 42 children infected with covid-19 have been treated in their orphanages. The provision of more shelters for the care of covid-19 patients has become a priority for the government due to the fast increase in people infected throughout the country. ![]() As of Tuesday afternoon, the Ministry of Health provided the following statistics on the status of the virus in the country: • 897 new covid-19 cases, bringing the total to 25,471 active cases. The ages of patients infected range from a three-month-old baby to a 99-year-old person. • 9,610 foreign-born people have been infected of the 42,184 cases since March, approximately 22% of the total cases. • 448 patients are being treated in public hospitals, where 149 patients are in Intensive Care Units in delicate health conditions (ages range from 11 to a 83-year-old person), 299 patients are in recovery rooms. Most of the infected patients are quarantined in their homes. • 16,270 coronavirus patients have fully recovered, which is a 38.6% recovery rate. • 94,942 people have been ruled out. • 151,694 medical covid-19 tests have been made. • 443 deaths of people infected with covid-19 since March, approximately 1.1% death rate. Of these 172 were women and 271 men. The ages range from 19 to a 100-year-old person. As of Aug. 31, authorities confirmed the death of 31 foreign-born patients. The youngest victim being a 19-year-old immigrant who lived in Guanacaste Province. On July 30, the ministry announced they would not provide updated information on immigrants who died from covid-19 in the country. Up to then, authorities reported 30 foreign-born people had died from that virus since March. Including the recent death of the 19-years-old patient.
