more
jobs in the country, agency says By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Despite the economic and health crisis caused by the pandemic, this year international companies located in the country have generated more jobs, the Costa Rican Investment Promotion Agency, CINDE, reported. According to the agency, international private companies created 19,806 new jobs, 18.4% more than the previous year. Currently, more than 330 of these companies generate more than 134,000 jobs in the country. Outside of the Greater Metropolitan Area, GAM, which is the zone made up of cities in the outskirts of San José such as Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago, there is a registered 15% annual growth in employment during the last five years. In total, 465 new jobs were created this year, for a cumulative total of 3,660 jobs outside the GAM, the agency said in its report. According to statistics provided by the agency, 54% of international companies reported growth this year. Of every 10 new jobs, 9 are generated by these companies. Also, this year, 26 international companies opened operations in the country. However, despite the positive numbers announced by the agency, the unemployment increase continues to be one of the most critical issues in the country. According to the Employment Survey of the National Institute of Statistics and Census, the unemployment rate was at 21.9%, from August to October, meaning the unemployed population reached 526,138 people. The most recent announcement of the expansion of a foreign company in the country was made last week by the California-based Intel. ![]() Intel Corporation announced that it will invest $350 million over the next three years to start assembly and test operations in the country. The investment is anticipated to create more than 200 new jobs in the coming months and the facility will begin to operate in the second half of 2021. "Intel continually evaluates its operations around the world to ensure that we have the right capacity to supply global demand. We will start the assembly and test facilities in Costa Rica to expand our global capacity so we can continue fulfilling Intel customer’s needs,” said Ileana Rojas, General Manager of Intel Costa Rica. “The existing infrastructure, synergy with the test operations that already exist on-site, the talent, the free trade zone regime, and legal environment gave Intel a favorable option to start its assembly capacity in Costa Rica.” The assembly and test facilities will be at the company's campus in San Antonio de Belén, Heredia Province and are expected to begin operations in the second half of 2021. Assembly/Test operations are part of Intel’s Manufacturing and Operations organization. Once the wafer manufacturing process is completed at Intel’s fabs, the cut wafers are sent to an assembly and test facility. Each chip is assembled into a package that protects it and enables it to connect to other components. Finally, it is tested for functionality. The new employees will be hired in multiple areas of engineering and there will also be opportunities for technicians in disciplines such as electronics, electromechanics, and related. People interested in working in this company can obtain more information on its careers site. In addition to the operations, Intel continues to invest in the people and local communities of Costa Rica. Over the last decade, employees have volunteered more than 190.000 hours and, only in 2019, Intel donated over $268.000. -------------------------- How could the government help more unemployed people find a job?
