The Inter-American Development Bank, IADB, launched the fAIr-LAC Costa Rica project in the country, which consists of promoting, educating and regulating the development and ethical use of artificial intelligence in Latin America and the Caribbean.

According to the bank, the project was developed in alliance with public entities, universities, private companies, among others.

"The fAIr LAC project seeks to ensure a responsible and widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in Latin America and the Caribbean from a platform designed to develop standards and tools that guide the responsible use of this technology," the bank said in its statement.

Among the plans being developed in Costa Rica are educating about the ethical risks of using AI in social services  and how to reduce those risks.

The program in Costa Rica will have a network of experts to educate the population about the opportunities of AI and the importance of its responsible use. In addition, tools will be implemented to mitigate ethical risks and improve the quality of technology in the country.

This project will allow Costa Rica to position itself as a pioneer in the Central American region in an issue that is increasing of interest to companies and world leaders, added the bank in its statement.

"Latin America and the Caribbean will not be able to recover from this crisis without making use of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, that is why digital transformation is a fundamental pillar of our 2025 Vision of 'Reinvesting in the Americas','' Mauricio Claver-Carone, bank representative said.

According to the international bank, artificial intelligence is a technology that has experienced exponential growth in recent years, and it still has enormous potential to benefit humans, cultures, societies and the environment. However, irresponsible use could bring risks and challenges, deepening existing gaps, on ethnic, gender and other issues.

This is the fourth fAIr launched in Latin America. Currently, the bank has the same project in Mexico, Colombia and Uruguay.

In April, the Ministry of Technology offered scholarships in courses for training and certification in artificial intelligence, financed with a loan from the bank.
