Increased covid-19 cases force more emergency measures By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Government authorities apply additional precautionary measures because of a confirmed 50 cases of patients infected with coronavirus covid-19. Among the most recent changes, the Ministry of Labor announced that with the support of Congress they will be working to modify labor laws in regards to working from home and other improvements for the benefit of employees and employers. In addition, to avoid the shortage in supermarkets, the National Commission of Emergencies requested to eliminate the delivery trucks' schedule limitations. In addition, the commission also announced that it continues to distribute drinking water with tanker trucks in places where the suspension of drinking water services was issued by the Public Water Institute, AyA. Also, the Ministry of Agriculture, in a joint effort with other ministries, announced the close tracking of markets and production flows to guarantee food supply in supermarkets. As of March 27, Social Security will expand their services at the National Rehabilitation Center to be used as extra space to attend patients infected by covid-19. Another government measure, announced on Monday, has suspended all public and private schools, including higher education from March 17 to April 4. Schools are set to reopen on April 13, extending the end of the school year until December 23. The ministry confirmed 9 new cases of people infected with the coronavirus covid-19 on Tuesday. As of today, there are 50 infected people in the country. Four of the infected patients are still hospitalized in intensive care. The name of the hospital where infected patients are being treated was not provided by authorities. According to the statistics provided by authorities, of the 50 patients, 24 are women (48%) and 26 are men (52%). Concerning nationality, 44 are Costa Rican and six are foreigners. Authorities did not provide further information on the condition of the patients. In the case of the infected foreigners, authorities did not release any further information about them. However, last week, three U.S. citizens were confirmed as infected patients. The ages of patients range from as young as 10 to as old as 87. Among these are a 10-year-old girl, a 13-year-old boy, and two more children under the age of 13. There is also a U.S. woman, 73, plus five patients over the age of 70. The rest of the 40 infected are adults. Cases were reported in five different provinces across Costa Rica. Alajuela Province has 13 confirmed cases in Alajuela Centro, one in Poás, one in Atenas, and three in Grecia. San José Province has five confirmed cases in Escazú, three in Santa Ana, four in Desamparados, six in downtown San José, three in Pérez Zeledón, one in Curridabat and one in Tibás. Heredia Province has one confirmed case in Barba, one in Heredia Centro, and one in Belén. Guanacaste Province has two confirmed cases in Santa Cruz, and one in Nicoya. Cartago Province has one confirmed case in San Pablo, one in La Unión and one in Cartago Centro. Authorities decided not to publish a summary of the new cases. "After the 20 people confirmed with coronavirus are surpassed, the instruction of the Surveillance Department is to provide only the information in ranges," said the ministry's press department. Even though the ministry decided not to publish the total number of suspects, authorities confirmed that 720 people classified as suspects were ruled out. Specialists are in the process of confirming or ruling out more coronavirus suspected cases using lab tests. It is expected that updated information about new cases will be released Wednesday. As of Tuesday, there were 194,618 reported coronavirus covid-19 cases globally, where 7,894 patients died and 81,080 patients are in recovery, according to the most current information from the World Health Organization, WHO.
