Manuel Antonio National Park

Costa Rica staff The Ministry of Environment announced a series of improvements in Manuel Antonio National Park in the Province of Puntarenas to meet the tourist influx before the start of the high season. According to the ministry, the park was created in 1972 and protects 352 species of plants, 107 species of terrestrial mammals, 335 species of birds, 93 species of reptiles and 56 species of amphibians. So the activities carried out should contribute to the actions of its management plan to protect the functionality of its ecosystems, it said. “We have made significant efforts within the ministry and strengthened inter-institutional relations and with our strategic allies to add any effort that leads us to reach a First World national park that allows socio-economic development without jeopardizing its ecological value,” said Pamela Castillo, vice minister of natural resources. According to the ministry, the main improvements in the park are: - The construction of a new wastewater treatment plant, with an investment of $40,000 to replace an told septic tank. - A new wastewater treatment system replaces the old septic tank with a donated system that includes issuing alerts to the authorities when the maximum capacity is being reached. According to Zdenka Piskulich, director of the Costa Rica Forever Association, "the donation includes the maintenance of the plant for the next five years." - Creation of an agreement between the ministry and the tourism institute, which will allow the hiring of staff to assist visitors to the Park, as well as the rental of additional health services. - Administrative contracting began so that by 2020 new health services are designed and contracted, as well as the improvement of current health services. This improvement will be financed by the institute's budget. - A constant flow of entry and exit of visitors will be maintained that will allow adequate management in the transit of users, allowing visitors to enter without overloading the national park. According to the National System of Conservation Areas, Manuel Antonio National Park is the most visited protected area in the country. "The important contribution of protected wild areas to the Costa Rican economy is something tangible and therefore we must reinvest in the conservation and constant improvement of its ecosystem services," said the authorities in its statement According to the Ministry of Tourism, Manuel Antonio National Park is already a consolidated product for tourism and is expected to continue to be with the best quality standards for those who visit it, while having the least possible impact on its ecosystem. The ministry announced that it will continue with improvements in seven other protected wildlife areas.
