By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The Municipality of San Jose will open on Wednesday a playground with ice igloo and snow for children in the Plaza de la Democracia in San Jose's downtown. According to the municipality, that same day the decorations with lights and Christmas symbols in the center of the city also will be inaugurated. The industrial refrigeration company Beirute, will be in charge of providing ice and snow in the children's playground known as the San José Igloo. According to Beirute, the North Pole environment will be created with two specialized pieces of freezing equipment. "In the igloo children will experience the weather conditions similar to the North Pole and can enjoy playing with a snowfall." One of the industrial freezers will be used to generate frost and snow, and the other will keep the icy conditions of the playground to maintain the ice-made igloo. "The idea of this igloo started when the founder of the company, Carlos Beirute -Peralta, wanted to give a surprise gift to his granddaughter, María Alejandra, so she could play with snow," said the company in its statement. "The gift called attention so much among the surrounding children that don Carlos decided to do it year after year as a gift, but now for all the children." Doing the snow and igloo playground took about three weeks, said thew Beirute firm in its statement. The Igloo of San José, will be open from Monday to Saturday, from 11 a.m. at 7 p.m. Sundays from 9 a.m. at 6 p.m. Admission is free. On Christmas and New year's Day 1 the playground will be closed to give a break so the employees in charge of maintaining the igloo playground can enjoy the holidays. In addition to the playground, there will be a storytelling show and games for children. All children must be accompanied by an adult, said the announcement. ![]() The National Electricity Company, in charge of the installation, said that this year its workers installed more than 3.5 million LED lights, and 80,000 lineal meters of LED-shaped lights for the Christmas themes in the central streets of San José. The decoration consists of 36 ornaments in the streets, 135 figures that decorate the lampposts and two murals for pedestrian bridges, among others effects lights sets, said the company In addition, 5,634 strips of LED lights are being installed. A 3D Christmas tree 20 meters high by 8 meters in diameter at its base will be installed in the Plaza de la Democracia, as well as two 3D giant spheres, five sets of lights for palm trees, a mural for displaying the Festival of Light, 131 advertising light boxes and 34 projectors of 1,000 watts will be installed along with others special effects lights. The Christmas Festival there is tomorrow. Admission is free. The Christmas Festival at the museum begins at 2 p.m. with games, dances and children's concerts and continues through the evening when the museum will be lighted up for Christmas, followed by a fireworks display. It is expected that thousands of families will attend the festival. Police will close roads near the museum at 2 p.m. to ensure safety for pedestrians. ![]() Thursday the traditional Christmas tree lighting at the Children's Hospital will take place at 6 p.m. But at 3 p.m. there will be a special show. Admission is free. This year more than 25,000 LED lights will be switched on, and the gigantic tree is right in the front gardens of the hospital on Paso Colón in San José. The activity started at 3 p. m. with the presentation of the National Symphony Orchestra, a clowns show, live music and a parade with Christmas characters like Santa Claus, fireworks, among others. ![]() Dec. 7 the traditional Bright Lights Parade will take place at Marina Pez Vela in Quepos on the central Pacific coast. This is a parade with ships decorated with Christmas lights and ornaments. In addition, the restaurants within the marina offer a special menu.
