On Monday, work began on the new tunnel and extension in the La Uruca District highway in San José Province, which could cause a traffic jam in that area.
To avoid overload of vehicles on the road, traffic officials will be managing new road interchanges. The first deviation was implemented going both directions on route 108 from La Uruca to Barrio Mexico District.
The second was implemented on the road between Hatillos District and La Uruca. Vehicles will be redirected 200 meters before reaching the main junction of the two roads.
The construction of the tunnel is part of a bigger project known as the new North Traffic Circle in Zapote Canton. The plan is to build a tunnel with four lanes, two in each direction, as part of the tri-level highway.
According to the Ministry of Transportation, road construction will take approximately 6 months. Officers will be controlling traffic until construction of the four-lane project is complete.
The North Traffic Circle in Zapote, known as Circunvalacion Norte is budgeted at $163 million, which is financed with a loan from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration, CABEI.
In March, authorities introduced the new overpass highway in Guadalupe Canton in San José.
Approximately 50,000 drivers can circulate daily with an average speed of about 49 mph on the new highway.
The overpass, almost 800 meters long, connects to the south with a second overpass located in Zapote District. It includes a crossing regulated by traffic lights, and four lanes (two in each direction) intended for vehicles to move smoothly.
In the upper part, the traffic is regulated with a traffic circle, with space for two lanes in each direction to allow access to the surrounding towns. It includes sidewalks on both sides, bus zones, a pedestrian bridge, and expanded culverts that were built over the Torres River.
