tourists in Spain
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The Tourism Institute sought to promote Costa Rica as a destination for meetings, congresses and conventions at the IBTM World Fair in Spain. According to the institute, the presentation of the country was made last week in Barcelona, where 16 Costa Rican companies offered their tourism services. Among the Costa Rican companies that were presented, with support from the institute are: Costa Rica Top Tours, IVI DMC Costa Rica, Hotel San Bada Resort & Spa, Marriott Hotels Resort of Costa Rica, Costa Rica Convention Center, Camino Travel & DMC Award, Gray Line Costa Rica, Destination Costa Rica- DCR, The Westin Golf Resort & Spa Playa Conchal, CRT Destination Marketing & Management Services, Café con Pinto by Cactus Tour, Amstar DMC Costa Rica, Cast Central America, Costa Rica Convention Bureau, VIP Escapes and Swiss Travel Costa Rica. At the IBTM World, 3,000 stands from 150 countries were presented, and there were about 78,000 sales meetings, the institute said. "The participation in this edition of the IBTM to promote Costa Rica in this industry has a lot of benefits since it attracts visitors with an average expenditure that is between three to four times higher than a traditional tourist," said Juan Carlos Borbón of the institute. "In addition, this is a repetitive client, since he tries to return to the destination for vacations." According to the institute, the Costa Rica stand was an area of 80 square meters, with open spaces and areas to talk with visitors. The design of the stand showed the country's natural attractions and was used by the Costa Rican companies to met potential clients. According to data from the institute, the meetings industry is an important source of income and jobs. It is a tourism sector that represents 22% of worldwide tourism, according to the World Tourism Organization. The country is being promoted in the segment of meetings, as it has excellent air connectivity, strategic location and high-level services, said the institute. ![]() On Nov 8, Selling Travel trade magazine from the United Kingdom selected Costa Rica as the best wildlife and nature destination for 2019. The award was received by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute during the World Travel Market international tourism fair that was taking place in London, England. According to the institute, Selling Travel readers include retail travel agents, home-based workers and reservation staff of tour operators throughout the United Kingdom. “We did a reader survey this year that asked agents in which travel segments they were most interested. Wildlife and nature were among the first three segments, showing that the best destination for wildlife and nature award is one that is particularly important for the UK travel trade,” said Laura Gelder, editor of Selling Travel. According to the institute, being part of an international tourism fair helps to position the country as a destination in the American and European markets for increasing tourist arrivals. ------------------------ What could the government do to increase tourism?
