Government seeks to increase tourism
in Monteverde

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The government, through the Tourism Institute, announced Friday a plan to increase tourism in Monteverde in Puntarenas Province.

According to the Institute, the plan includes five projects: promoting hiking, rural tourism, increase the training of tour guides, create a parking area and make simple regulations related to tourist activities.

Maria Amalia Revelo, president of the institute and also minister of Tourism, said she likes the increase but but this also implies more responsibility for the permanent improvement of the tourism product.

According to the Monteverde Chamber of Tourism, this plan is the route to turn Monteverde into a tourist destination known worldwide in the next five years.

The plan proposes to develop some major projects:

- Hiking and Rural Community Tourism: expand, improve and develop the roads in the community of San Luis.

- Provide tourism guides and environmental teachers high-level training that allows them to be, instruct and inspire locals and visitors.

- Build a parking area in the center of nearby Santa Elena that allows solving the existing road congestion problem. The development is recommended to include landscape design, sustainable and economically viable for its maintenance over time.

- Perform technical and legal studies to identify the regulatory standards that the District Municipal Council can approve in order to partially regulate some areas of growth.

According to the institute, Monteverde stands out for its spectacular cloud forest, its wide diversity of flora and fauna and for the great variety of birds. It is a small community in the canton of Puntarenas located on the western slope of the Tilarán mountain range. "For all these reasons, it is considered an iconic ecotourism destination in Costa Rica."

Monteverde will develop ecotourism, adventure activities, rural tourism and exhibitions, said the institute.

Since 2018 the institute has been designing projects to increase tourism in rural areas. The first places were Sarapiquí, Turrialba and Tamarindo. In 2019, in addition to Monteverde, places such as Golfito and the Saints Zone were included.

For the period 2020 to 2021 the institute plans to develop tourism in areas such as Manuel Antonio, La Fortuna, Dominical, Tortuguero, Parismina, Limón, Cahuita and Puerto Viejo.
