The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Costa Rican Embassy in China are coordinating with friendly countries for the possible use of charter flights that they have destined for their citizens and that can help in the repatriation of Costa Ricans who qualify in the repatriation program,  said the ministry in its statement.

Two Costa Ricans living in China have submitted formal requests for possible repatriation. "The cases were processed through the Costa Rican Consulate in Beijing and are being evaluated by the General Directorate of Migration, following the Protocol for the Repatriation of Costa Ricans Abroad," said the ministry.

According to the ministry and based on data from the consulate in China, 388 Costa Ricans live in that country. Of these 273 are registered at the consulate in Beijing, and 115 at the consulate in Shanghai.

Three  Costa Ricans are in the city of Wuhan, the place where the coronavirus was detected. The city is in quarantine by order of the government of China.

According to information from the ministry, there is no report of a Costa Rican being affected by the coronavirus.

The authorities are in coordination with national institutions and other Costa Rican diplomatic missions in Asia with the goal of delivering health supplies to the embassy and consulates in Beijing and Shanghai to be given to Costa Ricans, said the ministry.

The ministry is expected to give more information today on the possible repatriation of Costa Ricans who requested to return to Costa Rica.

According to Voice of America reports on Sunday, the death toll on mainland China from the coronavirus outbreak has now reached 908.

The China's National Health Commission reported Saturday a total of 37,198 cases.

Millions of people remain under lockdown in Hubei, the landlocked province at the center of the coronavirus outbreak where residents are complaining of food shortages.

There are about 150 confirmed cases in at least 23 other countries, including one death in the Philippines, the first outside of China, and one death in Hong Kong, said Voice of America.

Among the new fatalities is a U.S. citizen in Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, officials at the American Embassy in Beijing said Saturday. The embassy said that the 60-year-old American died Feb. 6.

A Japanese citizen is also reported to have died in Wuhan of viral pneumonia, likely caused by the coronavirus, although that has not been confirmed.

Meanwhile, Britain confirmed its fourth case of coronavirus and Spain its second, with both cases acquired by people who had made trips to France, Voice of America added.
