Representatives of the Ministry of Environment and other public institutions met with the Estonian company branched in Costa Rica, Timbeter, for the implementation of software for measuring trees and forest areas.
Timbeter creates software for digital timber measurement that uses machine learning technology and artificial intelligence for accurate log detection.
According to the company, Timbeter software measures round-wood and manages all the data digitally, with the use of a mobile platform with cloud storage, online inventory & reporting.
The application takes a photo of the timber whether in a pile, on a truck or in a container, and determines the number of logs, volume and diameter of each log. It calculates the diameters to see how many logs are in the specific range. Every pile is geotagged that makes tracking the timber’s origins easier, the company said on their website.
Every measurement, they said, is stored in a cloud providing a real-time overview of measurements related to their species and qualities.
The meetings between Estonian businessmen and government representatives took place at one of the company's operations sites, Bosques Selectos LWO SA, located in the community of San Jorge, Los Chiles Canton in Alajuela Province, from where they supply their clients with tree species such as teak, among others.

The company representatives explained how they use the technology for measuring logs in the field, trucks, sawmills and containers and other advantages of the software, the ministry said.
According to the ministry, the government seeks to integrate Timbeter technology to monitor the forestry sector, facilitate forest management and combat illegal logging in the country.
“During the activity, we were able to observe great enthusiasm in the use of technology on the part of the participants and how it can directly help their work,” said Rafael Monge, director of the Ministry's National Center for Geoenvironmental Information.
This meeting between representatives of the government and the timber company is part of the alliance program between both governments, added the ministry.
