Despite the economic and health crisis caused by the covid-19 pandemic, the government, through the Ministry of Planning, presented the project called Government City for the construction of 8 buildings with a budget of $318.6 million to relocate several public institutions.

The cost of constructing the buildings must be paid by the company hired for that work, according to the plan.

The government, through a concession model, will hire the construction company after developing a selection process. This company would be in charge of the design, construction, maintenance, among other expenses for 30 years.

During that period, the government will pay the company $50 million after all the institutions are installed in the buildings, the ministry said in its statement. The plan is to use the budget of rent payments, currently used by many public institutions, to pay rent to the company chosen to do the construction of the Government City.

Authorities expected the buildings could be completed by 2025.

Specialists from the Inter-American Development Bank had already carried out a study on this project as a donation. That includes urban, legal, financial, construction and environmental-impact models.

The plan includes approximately 153,000 square meters of construction, a parking area and a commercial area.

According to the ministry, at least 16 state institutions would be relocated to Government City. "This would save $357.8 million in expenses for these institutions," they said.

Since 2014, the government has planned the construction of these buildings for public institutions, the ministry said.

It is expected that in the next few weeks the government will announce the opening of bids to choose the company in charge of the Government City construction.

How should the Government City plan to relocate government institutions during the pandemic?  We would like to know your thoughts on this story. Send your comments to
