Government
donates property titles to squatters
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Housing and Urban Development Institute, know as Invu, began with the donation of 33 of 376 property titles, to people who squatted on state properties. The total value of the land donated is about $825,669. According to the Institute, these 376 people and their families, who are living on a property in the community of Los Guido*, in the canton of Desamparados in San José. This donation of land is covered by Law No.9561 that authorizes the Institute to donate the property in its name to people who lived in the property after was invaded since 1980. The institute continues with the process of donating the rest of 343 properties after this donation was approved in April 2018. "Some families built their own home without having a title for the lot they were living," the Institute said in its statement. "Other families received a housing government bonus that allowed them to build a house, however, having no title of ownership, the status of illegal occupation continued." But according to the law, the people who received the title of the property must meet requirements, before being the legal owners of the properties. "The donation of the property will be registered with the National Property Registry with a limitation that prohibits the new owner from transferring, leasing, changing nature or use other than housing for ten years", said the Institute in its statement. The Institute announced they are now in the process of donating properties, under the same conditions, to 625 people who are living as squatters on properties in the province of Limón*. ------------------------------------ Do you know people who are squatting on properties in your community?
