-Published: Tuesday, January 7, 2020- Government condemns
violence against democracy in Venezuela
By
the A.M. Costa Rica staff and wire services
The government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, declared its disapproval of the regime of Nicolás Maduro "which has violently prevented the entrance to the deputies of the National Assembly to exercise their right of election." According to the ministry, it is "unprecedented and gross maneuver exhibits the nature of the regime and constitutes a serious blow to democratic institutions." The government announced that it will not recognize any political representation of the Maduro regime, "because it lacks all legitimacy." At the same time, the government reiterates its solidarity with President Juan Guaidó, with the deputies of the National Assembly and with "the Venezuelan people in their struggle to restore democracy." Monday the Lima Group, made up of the governments of Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, and Perú announced support for President Guaidó. Among the main agreements taken by the group are: - Support for the re-election of Juan Guaidó as president of the National Assembly and president in charge of Venezuela. The group supports "the efforts made (by Guaidó) to tend for a peaceful solution, led by Venezuelans themselves, aimed at restoring democracy and constitutional order in that country." - Condemn the use of force and intimidating practices against parliamentarians of the National Assembly and reject any action aimed at undermining support for it, or its president. "Today's vote by the parliamentary majority in favor of the re-election of Juan Guaidó, following the Constitution and the law, represents a rejection of the reckless actions of the Nicolás Maduro regime that sought to prevent his appointment." - Renew the call for the soon return to democracy in Venezuela and, in that sense, reaffirm the need to hold inclusive, free, fair and transparent general elections, conducted by a renewed and independent National Electoral Council and Supreme Court of Justice and with the presence of independent international observers. - Reaffirm their condemnation of the systematic human rights violations committed by the illegitimate and dictatorial regime of Nicolás Maduro and urge the immediate sending to Venezuela of the Fact Determination Mission created by the United Nations Human Rights Council. - Reiterate their concern about the worsening economic, social, humanitarian and environmental crisis in Venezuela and the extent of the exodus of migrants from that country; they ask not to politicize the reception of assistance to the population and urge to increase international cooperation, especially financial, to help Venezuelan migrants and host countries to address this unprecedented critical situation in the region. The Lima group calls "the international community to accompany and work together in support of the restoration of the rule of law and the constitutional order in Venezuela." Monday, Venezuelan opposition leader Guaidó and his new rival, lawmaker Luis Parra, called for competing for legislative sessions today, after both claimed to be the country's parliamentary speaker, according to a special report by Voice of America. Sunday Venezuelan security forces with riot shields blocked Guaidó from entering the National Assembly chamber where he was expected to be re-elected head of the opposition-dominated legislature. Instead, Parra, who is backed by socialist leader Nicolas Maduro, proclaimed himself speaker after claiming to have been elected with 81 votes in the 167-member chamber. Guaidó has the support of much of the international community. Opposition lawmakers later re-elected Guaidó in a hastily arranged session at the headquarters of El Nacional newspaper, the last remaining newspaper in Caracas critical of Maduro and his ruling Socialist Party. A tally showed that 100 of Parliament's 167 legislators voted for Guaidó. -------------------- How could the Venezuelans depose Nicolás Maduro without having the support of the military?
