By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The government announced Friday the purchase of 100 gasoline engine and 10 electric motorcycles for the use of the Traffic Police.

According to the government, in the purchase of the 100 petrol gas engine motorcycles cost about $1.9 million. The approximate cost of each motorcycle was $18,746.

Also, the government purchased 10 electric engine motorcycles, valued at about $374,932. The approximate value of each motorcycle was $37,493.

According to the National Road Council, motorcycles will be distributed, according to the needs of each police station throughout the country.

The 100 gasoline motorcycles were purchased from Bavarian Motors of Costa Rica, BMW brand, year 2020 and have 853 c.c. of power engine and six speeds. Motorcycles have a three-year warranty with no mileage limit.

Also, motorcycles include extra accessories such as radio, helmet and special lights. These accessories have a five-year warranty on factory defects, said the council.

The 10 electric motorcycles are of Zero brand, Model 2019, bought from Moto Watt in Costa Rica.

The warranty on these motorcycles is less, only two years, said the council. Accessories and signs have a seven-year warranty. The battery has a five-year warranty.

"The Traffic Police takes a step forward and joins the state institutions that lead the transition to electric technology, these first 10 electric motorcycles will serve to generate data and demonstrate the great benefits of this technology," said the first lady Claudia Dobles, who has promoted actions for the decarbonization of the transport sector and the transition to electric mobility.

On Sep. 19, the Council, purchase of 10 electric motorcycles for the cost of $363,240.

According to the Council, the investment also includes maintenance for 80,000 kilometers, communication radios, signage, helmets, eight load centers, and their respective installation.

"It is estimated that motorcycles travel 250 km on each charge of an electric battery," said the council in its statement.

According to the council, among the main advantages of motorcycles are:

- Low noise emission.

-There are no leaks of gasoline and oil because these components are not used.

- The savings for non-use of fuel and maintenance are estimated to reach 57 colones for each kilometer traveled.

- They can be used to patrol both rural and city areas.

- They are not heavy which allows for easier control.

- They are automatic.

- They have high starting power.

- They offer braking stability.

- They can be recharged anywhere, due to the type of chargers.

- Maintenance costs are minimal.

- Five-year warranty on batteries with unlimited mileage.

In September the government announced plans to increase purchases to 53 vehicles and 70 motorcycles for public institutions such as ministries, universities, and banks among others.
