Gordo lottery number 15 serial 589 prize $87,000-plus per ticket
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
The big winner of the so-called Gordo Christmas national lottery was the number 15 and the serial 589. The prize is 50 million colones, which is approximately $87,933 per fractional ticket, know as a pedacito in Spanish.
Those individual tickets are part of a group of 40 tickets with the same number and serial, called an entero in Spanish. That means, one bill is composed of 40 tickets.
If one person bought one 40-tickets bill, with the winner number and serial, the prize will be multiplied by 40, which is approximately $3,517,320.
According to the board, the Jackpot winner ticket was sold in Paraiso and El Guarco in Cartago, Upala and San Carlos in Alajuela, Aserri and Goicohechea in San Jose and Siquirres in Limón.
Additional to the Gordo, there were 174 more prizes announced, ranging from $100 to $8,700 per each ticket. To claim an extra prize the ticket must match the same number and serial.
The list of winner extra prize tickets can be reached at the board site.
According to the board, the amount collected for the sale of the lottery is estimated at $9,492,882. Those funds, after reducing the operational expenses, will be shared in donations to other social aid organizations, as well as distributing $7.6 million in commissions to the lottery vendors.
All prizes are paid immediately and without taxes at the lottery board offices in San José downtown, or at any Banco de Costa Rica branch in the country. U.S. citizens, of course, would still have to pay taxes on their winnings to Uncle Sam.
The National Christmas Lottery organized by the Social Protection Board was held on Sunday night at Oxigeno Mall in Heredia.
