-Published: Thursday, December 19, 2019- Global Fund gives
Costa Rica $2.2 million for care of HIV
patients
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
The Global Fund, announced Wednesday that $2.2 million has been assigned to Costa Rica for improvements in health systems and care for HIV patients. According to the government, in 2014 it was agreed with the Global Fund to develop a prevention model for HIV, with teamwork between Social Security and the Ministry of Health, as well as other public institutions. This grant will allow the country to expand health services in prevention as well as campaigns on the human rights of HIV patients, said the government. The money will also be used by Social Security to implement a pilot program with the treatment known as pre-exposure prophylaxis. This is a new HIV prevention approach where HIV-negative individuals use anti-HIV medications to reduce their risk of becoming infected if they are exposed to the virus, said the government, adding that this is an addition for people to consider in the HIV prevention toolbox. "The Global Fund was one of the organizations present at a meeting Wednesday in Geneva, in which President Carlos Alvarado presented a broad portfolio of projects to about 20y representatives of missions and cooperating organizations to obtain resources to fully address the migrant and refugee population under the principle of shared responsibility, said the government in its statement. ![]() In February the Social Security carried out a campaign focused on groups at high risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Social Security called upon people to go to public hospitals and clinics to do the test for the human immunodeficiency virus. The institution offers rapid HIV testing, counseling, hepatitis B vaccination and condoms, said the report. Social Security developed a campaign on the importance of preventative measures and also tried to break down the fears and myths linked to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, according to the government. "The only deadly thing about HIV is not knowing that you have it," said the Social Security in its statement. According to Gloria Terwes, program coordinator, anyone can request testing at a local clinic and Social Security has open doors for a clinic or other facility to provide information and for staffers to take a blood sample. Also, Terwes called on the public to be tested as it is the only reliable way to know if a person is or is not infected by the HIV. Testing is voluntary and confidential, she noted. "Knowing your status allows you to access prevention and treatment services without delay if you are infected," said Terwes, adding that it is very important that people return to the clinic for the results of the test. Test can also be done on those who are not insured by Social Security. Specialists note that risky behaviors include not using condoms, having multiple sexual partners, prostitution and drug use, among others. Terwes added that symptoms of HIV infections usually occur within two to 12 weeks after been infected with the virus, which is the average period for antibodies to develop. Symptoms are similar to those of flu and include headache, fever, fatigue, body aches, sore throat, rash, swollen lymph nodes, night sweats and ulcers in the mouth or on genitals. The institution set up the site CCSS-SIDA for more information in Spanish on the steps to follow to take the test. People can also request at the Social Security clinic nearest home for the free test. -------------------- Did you know HIV test is free in Costa Rica?
