The Limón Port Administration Board announced Monday the arrival of the first German cruiser, the Mein Schiff, which brought more than 2,500 tourists, and 1,000 crew members mainly from Germany.

According to the board, the 313 meter long and 36 wide ship arrived at the port at 6:45 a.m. As part of the opening ceremony for the arrival of Mein Schiff 1, the traditional exchange of badges was held with the boat's captain, Jens Alexander Troier and Jan Martin Nielsen, general manager of Scansa Logistics.

Scansa is the shipping agency responsible for coordinating the arrival of cruise liners to the Port of Limón.

“We continue to pursue the development of a successful cruise season, said Andrea Centeno, chairman of the board.

According to data from the board, each cruise tourist generates approximately $150 in transactions.

"We recognize in the cruise industry an important trigger for the economy, and, therefore, our commitment is to serve them in the best possible way," said Centeno.

According to the board, Mein Shiff 1, is a cruise ship that was built in three years and cost about $625 million.

The cruise was inaugurated at the port of Hamburg in 2018. It has high technology with an energy-use system that reduces emissions by up to 30% compared to other ships of the same size, said the board.

Nov. 19 the Tourism Institute announced that the country was recognized as “Best Cruise Destination in Central America” for the Reader's Choice 2019 awards.

According to the institute, the awards are presented and announced by the Porthole Cruise Magazine in its 21st edition printed for the months of November-December.

"The winners of the awards were selected by online readers and followers of the magazine who had to choose from 51 cruise-related categories," said the institute in its statement.

Porthole Cruise Magazine is the world's leading cruise travel magazine, with a bi-monthly periodicity and whose objective is to invite the reader to plan their next trip, said the ministry. "The publication presents photographs, content that invites reflection and variety of topics from ships and cruise destinations, life on board, to activities on land," said the ministry.

Nov. 3 the largest cruise ship in the port's history arrived in  Limón. The ship was the Norwegian Joy with 3,883 passengers and 1,700 crew members, said the board.

According to Norwegian Cruise Line, the Norwegian Joy is 167,725 gross tons and 333.46 meters long.

The cruise ship arrived at 7 a.m. from Colón, Panamá. There was a nine-hour layover at the Port of Limón until departure to Roatán, Honduras, at 4 p.m., said the institute.

Also the same day, the Island Princess docked and remained in port until 6 p.m. when she sailed to Grand Cayman Island, the institute reported. The ship has a capacity of 2,200 passengers.

According to the institute, 85 artisans, six tourist companies and more than 200 tourist transport vehicles received hundreds of tourists who decided to disembark and get to know the Caribbean coast.

"They will tour the province knowing their natural beauties, enjoying local food and contributing to the economic revival of Limón," said the institute in its statement in advance of the visit. "The best selling tour is the one that goes to the Tortuguero canals."

According to Centeno, the promotion of the port for cruise ships will be one of the main activities in the new business vision of the institution.

"As of today and thanks to the facilities we have, we have been able to be the gateway to Limón of almost 200,000 cruise passengers per year," said Centeno.

According to the institute, for the current season, which began in September and will last for up to six months, Limón is expected to receive 112 ships, 224,000 passengers and more than 90,000 crew members.

According to the 2018 Economic Impact Study by the research firm BREA, made for the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association, in the category of excursions sold on-board the cruise ship, of the 36 destinations, Costa Rica is positioned as the first in sales.
