450 meters road in Guanacaste By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The German government, through the German Corporation for International Cooperation, GIZ agency, donated 450 meters of road that is part of the project to build a new 2.5-kilometer highway in Guanacaste. The GIZ is a government development agency providing international development cooperation. According to the Ministry of Transportation, a new 2.5 km highway is being built between the beaches of Tamarindo and Langosta in Guanacaste Province. In a zone of 450 meters, the GIZ agency has donated the construction of the road as part of the program,"Calle Completa" (complete street in English). The Complete Street program, in addition to having a driveway, includes solutions for the needs of pedestrians, bicyclists, public transportation, cargo transport and cars. This construction design "seeks to become a model for the development of highway infrastructure in the country," the ministry said in its statement. This donation will include pedestrian infrastructure such as sidewalks, ramps and pedestrian crossings, cycle paths, and lanes for vehicles. "From the German Cooperation we promote actions that promote safe and sustainable mobility," Claus Kruse, representative of GIZ said. "Complete streets are a solution to move from the cities focused on cars model, which generate pollution, noise, stress and accidents, to cities where all people have a place to be, to circulate, to enjoy, to move, to take advantage of the road in a safe, accessible and efficient way." The road is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2021. This is the second donation to improve green transports by the German government to the country this year. ![]() In September, a shipment of three electric buses, donated by the German government, arrived. "The development of knowledge associated with electric buses in the public institutions involved and in the bus operating companies is key to the sustainability of the electrification of public transport in the long term," Kruse said. "From the German Cooperation, we have committed ourselves to develop this training plan to guarantee the necessary knowledge for a successful implementation of the electric bus pilot and its subsequent escalation." This month the training for the maintenance, driving, recharging process, among others is provided by GIZ and the BYD transport company. BYD is the transport company winner of the international tender developed by GIZ for the purchase of the three electric buses, recharging and training centers. The donated buses are part of the public transport electrification pilot plan promoted by first lady Claudia Dobles. The electric buses are programmed to be on the streets this month, with the route between the cantons of San José, Desamparados and San Rafael in San José Province. The second route is between San José Province and Tres Ríos Canton in Cartago Province. And a third route is between the provinces of San José and Alajuela. -------------------- Have you heard of a road in need of repair in your community?
