Despite the economic crisis caused by the pandemic, in Turrubares Canton, the Rural Development Institute inaugurated a fruit processing plant valued at $433,535.

According to the Institute, the cost of the facilities was covered with the budgets of that organization and the Ministry of Agriculture.

The plant will be used by the Agriculture Center of Turrubares and farmers from the communities of Turrubares, Puriscal, Mora, Santa Ana, Escazú and Alajuelita, in San José Province, where they will be able to process mainly mangoes.

For the use of the facilities, the institute and Agriculture Center signed a lease agreement for the property where the plant was built, added the Institute.

This is the second processing plant for agricultural products that the institute opens this month.

On May 6, a cassava processing plant valued at more than $1 million began its operations, in Guácimo Canton, Limón Province.

The construction of the facilities was budgeted at about $1,011,043 and paid by the institute. The cost included the construction, remodeling, equipment purchase, electrification system, among others.

The plant is managed by the Guácimo Agricultural Center, where cassava is processed to be waxed and frozen. The product is cultivated and harvested by 279 farmers from Siquirres and Guácimo.

On the first day of operation, they processed 7,000 kilos of cassava bought from local farmers. That day 6,000 kilos of the tuber were waxed while the rest was peeled and packed in pieces to be sold in local markets.

The goal of enabling this cassava processing plant is to help local farmers, the institute said.
