The former President Luis Guillermo Solís attended a virtual hearing from his home in Florida, United States before the Congressional Commission that is investigating the alleged infiltration of drug traffickers in the southern zone of the country.  Solís governed from 2014 to 2018 and also won the elections as the presidential candidate of the same political party, Partido Acción Ciudadana, of the current President Carlos Alvarado. According to the Congress report, the former president Solís denied any association with a plan to build houses in the southern zone of the country. He said that he never pressured the local municipal authorities to develop that real estate project. The former President was called to answer the questions of the deputies regarding statements made by a man surnamed Cartín, who is being investigated by the Public Ministry for suspicions of drug trafficking. He also said that Solis was interested in the housing project in the southern zone, the Congress said in its statement. Solís denied ever meeting Cartín, let alone recommending him to develop a housing project in the community of San Agustín in Corredores Canton, Puntarenas Province. Also, Solis said he never modified any Presidential Decree to favor the specific construction of a housing project. The Ministry of Housing, the organization in charge of developing housing projects for low-income people, does not directly support construction companies, Solís said. He said that the ministry supports housing programs that complete a technical process, even in projects promoted by the municipalities. Solís rejected the statements made by Cartín during a meeting at the Municipal Corredores where he assured that his housing plan to develop in the community of San Agustín, had the support of the former president. During his government, programs were strengthened to fight against drug trafficking, he added.
