Social Security announced that they will provide for free the vaccination against covid-19 to some foreigners who do not yet have a residence card, known as Dimex.

According to Social Security, from the beginning of the vaccination campaign, priority was given to Costa Ricans and resident foreigners (who have their Dimex identification).

But now foreigners who have not had a Dimex identification yet and foreigners who have requested refugee status are allowed to get the vaccine.

This vaccination campaign for foreigners without Dimex and refugees is being developed with the support of the Ministry of Health and the United Nations.

Refugees or foreigners who have begun their refugee application, must go to the public clinic in their community, known as Ebais, and request to be registered in the database known as Edus. Among the documents that must be presented at the clinic are:

- Refugee request document.

- Place of work document.

- Card for refugees or card for refugee applicants.

- SITLAM card.

- In the case of foreign indigenous workers, they should present the Ngäbe-Buglé card, or the UNHCR certification indicating that they completed the refugee application process before September 15, 2021.

In the case of immigrant foreigners with no Dimex residency status, they must demonstrate that they are in a stable condition in the country. To achieve that category, some documents should be presented, such as:

- Have a document from their children's school, college or university in Costa Rica to demonstrate they are enrolled.

- A document from the employer indicating the place of work and the time working in the company.

- In the case of having a property located in Costa Rica, should be presented a certificate of the property owner.

According to Social Security, undocumented foreigners or refugee foreigners will not be required to be listed as Social Security membership to receive the covid-19 vaccine.

As of September 16, Social Security had applied 408,454 vaccine doses to foreigners, of which 280, 812 received their first doses and 127,642 received their second doses.

Among the vaccinated foreigners are: Nicaraguans, Venezuelans, Colombians, U.S. citizens, Salvadorans, Chinese, Panamanians, Hondurans, Peruvians and Cubans among other 23 different nationalities, Social Security said.

Foreigners interested in receiving the vaccine should go to the public clinic, Ebais, nearest to their residence and complete the procedures to be registered in the Edus database. For more information call the Social Security Covid line 905-225-2000.

As of Tuesday, 4,872,085 vaccines against covid-19 were applied in Costa Rica.
