On June 23, the Red Cross emergency monitoring department reported the death of a foreign man in Hermosa Beach, Puntarenas Province.

According to the report, on that Wednesday they attended an emergency call about a man who was swept away by the rip current. When the rescuers arrived at the place, the man was found dead.

The victim was identified by the Judicial Investigation Organization as a Polish citizen, Mircea Popescu.

According to Natalie Musumeci, a writer in Business Insider (a New York-based financial and business news website) Popescu was a major bitcoin investor leaving behind a cryptocurrency fortune reportedly worth more than $2 billion.

"His death has prompted questions surrounding what will now happen to Popescu's enormous bitcoin fortune,"  said  Musumeci.

According to the authors' article, Popescu, a controversial figure sometimes referred to as the father of bitcoin toxicity,  is known for launching a  bitcoin securities exchange called MPEx in 2012.

"The website was once an early breeding ground for early bitcoin IPOs, a practice that earned him the ire of the US Securities and Exchange Commission, an agency whose power he took no shortage of joy in openly undermining," the Bitcoin Magazine magazine said.

Popescu generated "an aggressive brand of unapologetic bitcoin evangelism that made his influence enduring despite documented instances of sexism, bigotry and anti-semitism," they added.

According to the report, he has claimed to hold 1 million bitcoins, though some have estimated that he had tens of thousands of coins.

Bitcoins were invented in 2008,  is a decentralized digital currency, without a central bank or single administrator, that can be sent from user to user on the peer-to-peer bitcoin network without the need for intermediaries.
