By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

On Saturday, officers from the Juan Santamaría International Airport, in Alajuela Province, arrested a Chilean citizen surnamed Avaria-Yañes, suspected of violating the Forest Law for trafficking in flora tropical species.

According to the police report, the man was detained after the transport of a large number of orchids, ferns, cacti and epiphytes, among other types of plants, were found hidden among his clothes inside his checked luggage.

Avaria-Yañes was about to board a flight to Amsterdam, the Netherlands when he was stopped.

According to Max Alvarado, chief of the Airport Police, the plants were found after a search of the luggage that was requested by the airline officials.

Once detained, his criminal record revealed he had previously been arrested for carrying live species in his luggage.

The plants were seized as part of the evidence of the charge against the man. He was taken to the cells of the Public Ministry of Alajuela, where he was interrogated by the judicial agents and must wait until a judge orders the pre-trial measures against them under the flora trafficking charge.
