First cruise ship of the season brings more than 2,000 tourists to Limón By the A.M. Costa Rica staff On Saturday, the cruise ship Carnival Fantasy, arrived at the port of the province of Limón*, on the Caribbean Coast. The first of the 2019-2020 season. According to the Institute of Tourism, more than 2,000 tourists and 893 crew members who came from Panama descended from the cruise ship into Limón. Andrea Centeno, president of the port of Limón, said improvements are being made in the infrastructure of the port to provide better service to tourists. In the port facilities, there is a boarding room with Wi-Fi, as well as air conditioning, and a free information center. The season of cruises begins in September 2019 and ends approximately in March 2020. During this period, the Institute has estimated 112 cruise ships, 224,000 tourists and more than 90 thousand crew members will arrive in Limón. Tourists who disembark and wish to visit the Limón community, can also buy local handicrafts and taste the typical dishes of the area. Also, several tour operators offer transport services, for those who want to tour the province during the 12 hours the tourists will be in the country. "Through the tours, local operators, transporters and local guides will directly promote the history, the exuberant nature, and the diverse culture of the Caribbean," said Centeno. The Carnival Fantasy cruise takes a 10-day tour on its sea route before arriving in Costa Rica. Tourists also visit cities in Panama, Roatan Island, Honduras, Cozumel, Mexico, until they reach the port where they settled in Mobile, Alabama, U.S. According to Centeno, in the 2018 season, tourists reported that Puerto Limón was one of their favorite places during the trip. On March, as A.M. Costa Rica previously reported, the Institute reported the cruise ship season 2018-2019, the most important cruise ships to arrived in the country was the Sea Princess with 1,870 passengers who disembarked at the port of Limón, from Key West, Florida.  On July 13th, the last cruise liner of past season, the Queen Elizabeth, arrived at Puntarenas. Of the last year season 153 arrived at Pacific ports and 96 at the ports in the Caribbean. The statistics of the Institute show that the cruise tourist spends an average $137 per day.
