The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, known as Elections Canada, an independent, non-partisan agency that reports directly to Parliament announced the due date to register to vote is October 21st.

The Canada Elections Act states that a federal election must be held on the third Monday of October in the fourth calendar year following the previous federal election. As the last election was on October 19th, 2015, the next fixed election date is October 21st, 2019.

According to Elections Canada, to register and vote in the federal election, Canadians citizens must be at least 18 years old on election day and be able to prove their identity and address.

“Most Canadians who are eligible to vote are already registered in the National Register of Electors,” said Elections Canada in its statement

But citizens abroad may check off both Elections Canada boxes on their tax return this year if the registration is updated with their current home address.

To verify or update the address information or to register to vote, citizens should use the Online Voter Registration Service*, or call at Registrations Services phone number 1-800-463-6868, before Tuesday, October 15th, at 6 p.m.

To vote in a federal election, Canadian citizens must be registered on the list of voters, but if the person registered before the election, they should get a voter information card in the mail by October 3rd.

“Canadian voters living abroad who have previously resided in Canada can vote by special ballot in federal elections, regardless of how long they have been living abroad. The deadline to apply to vote by mail is Tuesday, October 15th, at 6 p.m., Eastern time,” said Elections Canada in its statement.

According to Elections Canada statistics, as of September 15th, there are 22,329 electors on the International Register of Electors. The top 10 jurisdictions for international registrations are the United States with 9,695 number of electors, the United Kingdom with 2,359 electors, Australia with 992 electors.

The balance of the voters are in countries such as Germany, Hong Kong, France, Switzerland, Japan, and the Netherlands, among others.

Elections Canada announced they recently mailed out voter registration letters to eligible voters. “If you're 18 years of age or older and a Canadian citizen, please register to be ready to vote at the federal election this fall”, they said.

On October 21st, 25 million Canadians will elect the 338 members of the 43rd Federal Parliament. According to the survey index 338canada there is a tie between the PLC Party and the PCC Party.
