By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Experts from the National Emergency Commission are conducting expeditions in the areas near the Rincón de La Vieja Volcano, in Liberia Canton, Guanacaste Province, after the big eruption on Monday. According to the commission, the team will inspect the areas near the volcano due to the material spewed from the eruption, known as lahar, which has descended through the river Quebrada Azul, Azufrada and Pénjamo. Also, specialists of the Volcanological Observatory confirmed ashfall and a strong sulfur smell in the north and northwest sectors of the volcano lower zones, specifically in the towns of Gavilan and Bromelias. However, despite yesterday being one of the strongest explosions recorded in recent years, according to experts, no deformation has yet been observed in the upper area of the crater. A compilation of videos where the eruption is seen from different angles and the incandescent material going down the rivers published by the Observatory can be seen on the AM Costa Rica YouTube channel. The 3-minute volcano eruption was recorded yesterday at 5:42 a.m. The height reached by the gas column rises a measured 3,416 meters above the height of the crater, which is about 11,204 meters above sea level. Commission officials call on the public not to approach the area of the volcano due to the risk of gases, burns of passing near the lahars rivers and the possibility of more eruptions. Since 2020, more volcano eruptions were registered to make the Commission declared a green alert for the districts of Aguas Claras and Dos Ríos located in Guanacaste. Access to the volcanic crater remains closed due to continuous eruptions. Authorities call on people in the communities surrounding the volcano to report to 911 for any unusual situation with the volcano. Also, residents were advised to follow the recommendations of the Emergency Commission of the local communities. In 2016, another volcano, the Turrialba located in Cartago Province, made a big eruption sending ash clouds even over San José. ![]() A morning rush hour eruption of the Turrialba volcano put a mist of ash over much of the capital and points northwest. The continued eruption happened from May 13 to 16. Certain private schools closed after the Ministry of Education went on emergency status. Some airlines have chosen to avoid landing at the Juan Santamaria International Airport in Alajuela Province and turned to Daniel Oduber airport in Guanacaste. In the case of Tobias Bolanos International Airport in San José, operations were suspended to assess and clean the ash from the runways. Turrialba volcano is one of the more active in the country that has been erupting and emitting vapor and ash also since 2010. -------------------------- What have you heard of emergencies caused by the Guanacaste volcano eruption in your community?
