Due to the health crisis caused by the covid-19 pandemic, this year the Eugene O'Neill Theater will be streaming Jazz Fest 2021, from April 27- 30.

Jazz Fest 2021 is a bridge between the artistic union of the United States and Costa Rica through music, the Eugene O'Neill Theater said in its statement. "It is expected that with this project it will be possible to take Costa Ricans to a space of sound richness through the jazz repertoire, to feed the resilient spirit as an ingredient of health and emotional well-being," they said.

The festival is held in commemoration of International Jazz Day celebrated on Friday, April 30.

In Costa Rica, the Jazz Fest began in 2007 organized by Costa Rica - United States Cultural Center, an organization with 75 years of promoting English language learning in the country and strengthening cultural ties between both nations.

According to the Eugene O'Neill Theater statement, the celebration of the festival will continue (at least virtually) motivated to continue the festivals held in previous years (2007, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015), but this year counting with the support of the National Theater.

This year’s festival also marks the "celebration of the 75th anniversary of Costa Rica - United States Cultural Center, which was previously postponed by the pandemic," the Eugene O'Neill Theater said in its statement.

Jazz Fest 2021 seeks to be a response of high cultural value in a time that is lived today, and to make a call for solidarity in the face of the crisis caused by the covid-19 virus, added the Theater.

Costa Rican and U.S. musicians will be performing the best of their music. Among the Costa Rican artists are Mali, Pablo Campos, Charlene Stewart, Sonsax, Edgar Sequeira, Swing en 4, Eduardo Montero, Jose “Chepe” González, Jazz Garbo, NYU Jazz Artists and Michelle González.

Musicians representing the U.S. include jazz bands from Florida International University, Florida State University, Loyola University, New Orleans University, Mint Jazz Museum, Southern California University and New York University.

This year, the festival will take place at the National Theater, but concerts will be streamed at 12 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., from April 27 to 30, on the Facebook pages of the Costa Rica - United States Cultural Center and the Eugene O'Neill Theater.
