Enabling homeless shelters in San José By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The Joint Institute of Social Aid, together with other public institutions, has provided shelters for homeless people who live on the streets in the center of San José. The four shelters will provide a place to sleep for the night, food, personal hygiene, and security to more than 200 homeless people. The people who will live in the shelters are not infected with covid-19, the institutions stated in its statement. However, these shelters do not cover a large number of homeless people in the capital. According to the institute in the country, there are 5,779 indigent people. In San José, 3,756 people live in this condition. The established shelters are located in the Hatillo district in the center of the capital, in the Recreation Center of the Municipality of San Jose and in the Dormitory Center of the same municipality. Also, the municipality covers the minimum conditioning expenses such as mattresses, pillows, sheets, covers, blankets and clothes, as well as the payment of public services as electricity and drinking water. A non-profit organization Chepe Se Baña was hired by the National Commission for Emergencies to provide food, cleaning, security, hygiene and personal hygiene services to the beneficiaries of the shelters. Also, specialists from the Institute on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence will give support to people who are suffering from addictive diseases to alcohol or drugs. According to Alexander Solís, president of the Emergency Commission, the shelters will be temporarily open due to the emergency, so that this community of people reduces the risk of covid -19 infections.
