Eleven Costa Rican athletes have qualified to compete in the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games scheduled to be held from July 23 to Aug. 8 and the Paralympic Games from Aug. 24 to Sept. 5. in Japan.
The most recent athlete to qualify is Ian Ignacio Sancho in Judo, a Japanese martial art.
According to the Sports Institute, Sancho is in 69th position in the world ranking with 814 points, which makes him the eleventh representative of Costa Rica in the Olympics.
Last month, Sancho defeated the Brazilian William Lima who was the Pan American Champion. He also defeated two competitors from Ecuador, Lenin Preciado and Byron Guillén at the Panamerican open in Guayaquil.
Sancho joins Team Costa Rica, which is made up of:
» Brisa Hennessy Kobara and Leilani McGonagle Cada for surfing.
» Luciana Alvarado Reid for gymnastics.
» Kenneth Tencio Esquivel for BMX Freestyle.
» The sisters Andrea and Noelia Vargas-Mena in athletics.
» María José Vargas-Barrientos and Andrey Amador- Bikkazakova for cycling.
» Beatriz Padrón and Arnoldo Herrera for swimming.
The Paralympic team already has six Costa Rican athletes selected:
» Steven Román in table tennis.
» Henry Raabe for cycling.
» Sherman Guity and Melissa Calvo and Ernesto Fonseca in athletics.
» Andres Molina in taekwondo.
All athletes must be vaccinated to participate in the games.

According to the health authorities, vaccinating this group was a priority due to the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games taking place in a few weeks. The second dose of treatment for athletes delegation is scheduled to take place on July 2.
