Duty-free zone in Golfito improves purchasing system in 2020
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
In January purchases in the Golfito duty-free zone in the southern zone of the country will be easier for customers, as reported by the Southern Development Board, the organization in charge of the Golfito Commercial Center.
The Golfito duty-free zone, founded 29 years ago, is a commercial center where all products are tax-exempt, and therefore at much lower prices than in the rest of the country.
Among the main changes to attract customers is the elimination of the requirement to request a special identification card before making purchases.
That card is made manually by the administration of the commercial center. For that reason, customers had to wait 24 hours to get the card before shopping.
From 2020, the manual card will be replaced by a digital one, which speeds up the delivery system for shopping from 24 hours to just a few minutes.
"People will get the card through a system that only requires the use of the fingerprints," said the Southern Development Board.
In addition, the digital card for purchases is free.
Another improvement is to allow people to buy as many times as they want. This is because currently people can only buy at the outlets once every six months.
Another change is the elimination of merchandise checkpoints. Currently, people must go through the checkpoints for the review and authorization to take the products out of the commercial area. Those controls will be removed in January, officials said.
In addition, the shopping center has developed an application for use in cell phones and any other type of device, where customers can access invoices for their purchases, as well as review the prices of products and offers by the stores.
The Golfito free-zone, known as the Deposito de Golfito in Spanish, was created in 1990 with the goal of promoting tourism and increase economic commerce in the area after the decline of the banana operations there.
The duty-free zone is located in Avenue 8, next to the Golfito airport.
All products within the free zone are tax-free. Both Costa Ricans and foreigners can enter the commercial zone. And, as of January, with fewer restrictions than there are currently.
